Holden Arboretum

Holden Arboretum in Kirtland, Ohio is an unforgettable natural experience and one of the region’s hidden gems. Covering 3,600 acres, this gorgeous park includes gardens, native forests, natural areas and 20 miles of trails with an incredible array of flora and fauna to discover – plus special events and educational programs throughout the year!

Holden was established as a memorial to mining magnate Albert Fairchild Holden and his daughter Elizabeth in 1931 as part of their legacy. Inspired by Arnold Arboretum at Harvard University, Albert hoped to replicate it here in Northeastern Ohio. Over time, Holden grew into an arboretum consisting of various gardens as well as more than 1,000 acres of forest; later expanded through purchasing Baldwin Farm (556) which enabled it to become full time non-profit entity and part ways with Cleveland Museum of Natural History.

Today, the Arboretum stands as a national leader in plant conservation, research, and education with more than 9,000 woody species from 79 genera and families represented. Additionally, it was designated as a National Natural Landmark by the Center for Plant Conservation as its Midwest representative and features two botanical gardens; Helen S. Layer Rhododendron Garden and Crabapple, Lilac and Viburnum Garden.

The Arboretum boasts several special collections, such as Myrtle S. Holden Wildflower Garden and Arlene and Arthur Holden Jr. Conifer Collection, as well as offering numerous trails like Old Valley Trail (2.9-mile), Pierson Creek Valley (PVV), and Offutt Memorial Boardwalk.

Holden offers visitors plenty of opportunity to make the most of their visit, with three hours being an ideal length of time to experience its delights fully. In particular, visitors should make time to visit one or more of its dog-friendly beaches – where dogs may run freely on the sand and water off-leash without incurring leash fees; though certain rules must still be observed and kept your pup leashed at all times.

Chicago’s Lakefront Trail

As the sun rises, a stunning ribbon of white sand glistens along Chicago’s Lakefront Trail. Spanning 18 miles between Ardmore Street on the northern edge and 71st Street near South Shore Drive on its southern end, the path takes riders through lush parks with skyline views while winding their way through Chicago lakefront neighborhoods. Though Chicago’s most scenic path has room for improvement, a recent project should make cycling much more pleasurable.

The Lakefront Trail is a multiuse path designed for cycling, walking, jogging and skating that runs alongside Lake Michigan shoreline. Bikers in particular sometimes found it challenging due to pedestrians and other riders sharing it; during summer months this problem became even more evident as users could exceed 100,000 daily on this popular recreational route.

Navy Pier Flyover, a recent project, has helped reduce congestion on the trail by separating cyclists and pedestrians, improving lighting, drainage and on-street accessibility; in addition, these efforts support Chicago’s goal of increasing safety at intersections as well as improving infrastructure on paths such as underpasses and overpasses.

Lakefront Loop, Chicago’s newest trail addition, connects numerous parks and cultural destinations throughout Chicago’s central business district. At 1.7 miles in length, this circular route makes for an enjoyable journey through some of its top sights – like Lincoln Park Theater on the Lake or Soldier Field as one of the finest sports facilities in the Midwest.

The Loop offers many restaurants that welcome dogs at outdoor tables. When dining out with your furry companion, always ensure they remain leashed and under control at all times; use clean-up bags as soon as you return from an outing to pick up after them promptly. Before heading out on long hikes with your pup, always consult your veterinarian first to get their advice about safe routes to take. They may provide useful tips to ensure an enjoyable and safe outing experience!

Beartooth Highway

Beartooth Highway has been recognized by National Scenic Byway’s All-American Road award. Winding its way 5,000 feet through lodgepole pine forests, this drive leads to alpine lakes, 20 peaks exceeding 12,000 feet, and glacially-carved cirques.

The scenery along this scenic highway is truly remarkable, offering ever-evolving landscapes at every mile marker. As you start from the valley floor, you’ll witness endless zig-zags and hair-raising switchbacks — as well as flat straightaways offering incredible views — along with scenic viewpoints and multiple turnouts along its length. Motorcycle riders especially may find navigating these mountain roads thrilling; you must navigate tight zig-zags while keeping loose turns at a safe distance while maintaining focus while doing so.

As you travel the highway, keep an eye out for wildlife. Elk, bighorn sheep or even moose may appear unexpectedly in the Beartooth mountains; predators like grizzly bears and mountain lions have also been known to frequent this region – just be careful that you stay at a safe distance! Never approach or feed any wild animal.

Beartooth Highway can be enjoyed throughout the year, but summer offers the ideal conditions. When weather is generally milder and more pleasant (though snow may still fall at higher elevations), summer offers the ultimate experience on this scenic highway.

If summer doesn’t work out for you, winter offers another wonderful way to experience the highway. While higher elevations might see snow-covered trails, you’ll still get to experience it in its full glory! Additionally, this time of year offers fantastic skiing and other snow activities.

No matter when or why you visit West Jefferson, there’s sure to be a pet-friendly vacation rental perfect for you and your family. From sprawling mountain cabins to cozy lakefront homes, these rentals feature amenities perfect for both you and your four-legged friend – just remember they must remain leashed at all times under physical control of an adult at all times! With such fun activities awaiting, make this vacation truly memorable!
