A Photographer’s Diary – High Country Adventures

While we would all like inspiration to come instantly and unfettered, ideas often form over time and take form across different sources; be they screenshots from phones, Instagram posts or notes written down on paper.

High Country Adventures was established by four friends with a shared passion for outdoor activity back in 1975 and today offers whitewater rafting, kayaking, moutain biking and sunset cruises on Ocoee River!

Trip Reports

As its title indicates, this special limited edition reproduces Shore’s journal from his month-long road trip in 1973. Photographs, lists of where he stayed and ate as well as various receipts, postcards and other ephemera are all reproduced to provide readers with a glimpse into Shore’s creative process.

High Country Adventures was established by four outdoor-loving friends in 1975 as a gear shop to cater to outdoor pursuits. Today, Gerald Marshall, Bubba Sloan, Denny May, and Ned Buxton continue their journey by leading daring cruises down Ocoee River’s rapids while offering outdoor gear indoors at their Buckhead store or via retail side at Chattanooga Outpost retail side.

Trip Planning

Narrative photography is a form of picture-taking which helps individuals express emotions, ideas, sights, and experiences through storytelling. Narrative photographers must pay particular attention to structuring a story so its audience is able to follow it, understand it, and relate to its themes; some basic outlines include symbolism, sequence, contrast, environment and chronicles.

Life moves slowly in Alaska’s vast wilderness, where eagles soar overhead and whales dive beneath clear waters. Trip participants who experience its magic come away enlightened.

Preparation

Diaries are typically an account of what happens in one day; from routine happenings and unusual occurrences to emotions, thoughts, actions, reactions and opinions written chronologically. Applying this definition to photo journaling means recording daily happenings as pictures to create an in-depth story that captures experiences, feelings and emotions in meaningful way.

Photo storytelling can be daunting if you have never done it before, especially if this is your first attempt at it. The sheer volume of images produced each day–screenshots on your phone, memory card photos and Instagram posts as well as postcards or pages from magazines as well as physical objects like postcards can become overwhelming – can become dauntingly hugely overwhelming at first. But once you begin this project you might just find that it quickly pays dividends!
