Hortobagy

Hortobagy National Park, one of Hungary’s largest national parks and one of Europe’s biggest natural plains with unspoiled meadows interspersed with marshes and pools is listed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list, boasting an abundance of bird species that span from central Asia all the way into Mongolia. It was designated World Heritage status in 2007 due to its remarkable steppe grassland terrain spanning an enormous swath across central Asia all the way into Mongolia.

Hortobagy Park’s vast open grasslands are home to an abundance of birds, such as Great Bustards by the thousands; an array of wildfowl such as Ferruginous Duck & Taiga Bean Geese; as well as powerful Saker Falcon & Imperial Eagle raptors. Many fishponds within its grounds also attract waterfowl such as native Pygmy Cormorants as well as migrants such as Stone Curlew & Jack Snipe.

Hortobagy becomes an epicentre for crane migration every autumn, hosting massive flocks of Great & Lesser White-fronted Geese, Taiga Bean Geese and Red-breasted Geese as well as other waterfowl species that migrate during migration.

As well as offering outstanding birding opportunities, this region also draws those interested in Hungary’s rural culture and traditions. Szombathely, which has been listed by UNESCO since 1992 and features traditional farm houses used as museums are just minutes away – ideal for families. Furthermore, families with young children will especially love visiting Shepherd’s Gate Museum where they can get a sense of how life was in this part of Hungary at the turn of the 19th century.

Hortobagy isn’t just an ideal spot for birders; there’s much more going on at Hortobagy! A few hundred shepherds & cowboys, commonly referred to as csikos, still roam its wavy grasslands on horse-drawn carriage tours, providing visitors with insight into centuries-old animal husbandry traditions. Visitors often encounter these cowboys alongside puli dogs – a breed with coat of hair similar to mop – racka sheep with corkscrew horns horns; in addition, these cowboys will willingly demonstrate their rodeo skills!
