The Adirondack High Peaks

Adirondack High Peaks have long been an iconic feature of the region’s landscape, drawing humankind’s gaze for millennia. Their jagged summits stand out against an otherwise flat region filled with mountains – they elicit everything from reverence and respect to challenge and competition, from exploration and conquest to wilderness preservation.

Bob Marshall made headlines for two hiking pamphlets written during the late 19th and early 20th century that captured the interest of fellow hikers: one, The Adirondack Forty-Sixers, detailed his attempt at summitting all 46 mountains over 4,000 feet tall in Adirondack Park; while his second work, Peaks and People of Adirondacks, examined mountain history and culture through ADK members’ hiking expeditions.

Marshall’s peaks became the focus of many ADK hiking expeditions, while his writings inspired newfound interest in mountain stewardship. At a time when environmental awareness increased rapidly, people realized that previous generations weren’t adequately maintaining the High Peaks; waste accumulation rapidly occurred regardless of official policies that suggested burying food cans; alpine habitat was being polluted with an increasing influx of aluminum litter and cans into its natural surroundings.

This one day adventure photo tour explores various locations within the scenic High Peaks region near Lake Placid / Keene in New York. This provides an ideal opportunity for shooting wide angle scenics as well as macro or telephoto details.
