Hamilton Pool
Just 23 miles outside Austin lies a secluded natural swimming spot hidden within hill country chaparral: Hamilton Pool is a circular pool featuring an attractive limestone overhang and 50-foot waterfall that creates a magical grotto, providing the ideal destination for sunbaked adventurers during hot summer days. First used as a cooling spot by Tonkawa and Lipan Apaches who once resided here, since being discovered as an outdoor swimming spot it has been enjoyed by swimmers and hikers since being discovered in late 1860s; today it remains as part of nature preserve protected parkland surrounding it.
Hamilton Pool is an idyllic natural swimming hole that draws tourists from all around the country and the globe, drawing in visitors with its captivating blue waters surrounded by verdant cliffs and ferns. Fed by an underground river, its rich ecosystem supports various forms of wildlife as well as being popular among Instagrammers seeking to capture its beauty.
Though the Grotto is stunning, its pool can become overrun with people and their dogs, leading to high levels of bacteria that have led to its closure for swimming and hiking. Although swimming may not be possible at certain parts of the park, other parts remain open year-round for hiking, picnicking and photography opportunities. Its surroundings boast a diverse wildlife population including mosses, cliff swallows and maidenhair fern – an excellent location for birdwatching and photography!
Park officials plan on reopening some hiking trails soon so swimmers and visitors can explore the area safely. However, it should be remembered that this natural pool ecosystem requires special care; therefore it is imperative that reservations be made prior to visiting its preserve.

Our featured run route takes runners through some of the highlights of Hurst Creek Preserve including creek crossings, wooded single track runs, scenic overlooks, waterfalls and picturesque vistas.
At this park, there are multiple hiking trails – Hurst Creek Loop and Squires Trail being just two – that you can explore. Squires Trail provides an extremely challenging route that leads to out-of-the-way picnic areas and hangout spots where visitors can appreciate nature at its finest. In addition to that, volleyball and basketball courts, playgrounds, and baseball fields can all be found within its borders.
