If you’re planning a visit to Mount Feathertop, you’ll want to take a small group guided tour. These tours include half and full day walks to the peak, plus accommodation at cosy guest houses. For a full day walk to the peak, you’ll need to leave Melbourne in the morning. You can get a pick up from hotels in the city, like the Radisson on Flagstaff Gardens, or the Savoy Hotel on Little Collins Street.
The easiest way to reach Mount Feathertop is the North Razorback track. Although it is the shortest approach to the peak, it can be exposed in bad weather.
Alternatively, you can take the route through the Bungalow Spur. The Bungalow Spur connects to a hut called Federation Hut. Located at the top of the spur, the hut offers composting toilets, a wood-fired heater and a water tank.

As a rule of thumb, there will be an average of one death per decade on Mount Feathertop. Many accidents on the mountain are due to snow cornices. This is why it’s important to carry sun protection.
If you’re visiting in spring, you might encounter some snow on the mountain. Snow will be lifted to 1800m, and a thin layer of cloud will cover the summit. Until late in the spring, snow will remain in the summit gullies, giving them a feathered appearance.
On Mount Feathertop, the highest temperature recorded is 14 degC. The lowest is 4 degC. Weather can vary drastically. Some days can be surprisingly mild, and other days can be rainy or snowy.
